I grew up on the Black Isle in Highlands before moving to Edinburgh to study nursing in 1990. I qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1993 and after initially working in various nursing roles in Oncology, then School Nursing I found my niche as a Nurse Practitioner in General Practice in 2004. This role sparked my interest in female health and I gained my Family Planning Theory and Practice qualification in 2006.

In 2021 having recognised a gap in my own knowledge, and wanting to improve the care we were providing to perimenopausal and menopausal women in the practice, I undertook training with the British Menopause Society and completed their Principles and Practice of Menopause care course along with online training from Newson Health.

Having set up and run one of the first dedicated menopause clinics in General Practice in Edinburgh, in 2022 I decided to take my passion and knowledge for all things Menopause into workplaces and set up Workplace Menopause Support.

The journey so far

When I first decided to set up my freelance business the thought of standing up in front of an audience delivering an educational session terrified me. After many years of one-to-one discussions within the consultation room I felt so far out of my comfort zone that I was unsure if this venture was attainable. I bravely took the first step and delivered my inaugural session, and although I was incredibly nervous, I was amazed to find that I actually enjoyed it.

The audience were engaged, they even laughed, I was surprised to be given a round of applause at the end. After that first session I knew that I had made the right decision to pursue this new role. And the nerves? Well, although they are not as bad as the first session I still feel slightly terrified each time I stand up in front of a new audience!

I do not have any links with, nor have I ever worked for any pharmaceutical companies.
